Wood floor fitters in Wandsworth

Wood Floor Installation Wandsworth

Supply and fitting of wood floors, from the subfloor check to the last skirting board.

Wood Floor Installation in Wandsworth, From Survey to Finished Trims

Wood floor installation in Wandsworth starts well before the first board goes down. We supply the flooring, then survey the room, check the subfloor and plan how the floor will be laid, so the finished result is flat, quiet and neat at every edge.

If you are looking for wood floor fitters in Wandsworth, this is the core of what we do: supply and fit for solid wood, engineered, herringbone and parquet floors, in a single room or across a whole ground floor.

What Happens Before We Lay a Board

Most problems with a wood floor can be traced back to what was underneath it. Before laying, we check the subfloor for flatness, dryness and soundness. Concrete floors are checked for moisture. Timber floors are checked for loose boards, movement and gaps. Dips and high spots are levelled so the new floor sits properly.

Boards are then acclimatised: left in the room so they settle to its temperature and humidity. Skipping this step is a common cause of gaps and lifting later, especially with solid wood.

Ways to Fit a Wood Floor

Glued down

The board is bonded to the subfloor. Suits engineered and parquet floors and gives a solid, quiet feel underfoot.

Floated

Boards are joined to each other and lie on an underlay without being fixed to the subfloor. Quicker, and useful where the subfloor should not be disturbed.

Secret-nailed

Tongue-and-groove boards are fixed through the edge to a timber subfloor or battens, hiding the fixings.

The right method depends on the board, the subfloor and whether there is underfloor heating. We recommend one at the survey and explain why.

Finishing Details That Make the Difference

A good floor is judged at the edges. We leave an expansion gap at the walls so the wood can move, then cover it with skirting or beading. Thresholds are fitted where the wood meets another floor, and door lining or architraves are trimmed where needed so boards tuck neatly underneath.

Boards are usually finished in hardwax oil or lacquer. Oil gives a natural matt look, while lacquer gives a harder surface layer. We help you choose between them, depending on how the room is used.

What Affects the Price of Installation

Installation is quoted from the survey, not from a price list. The main factors are the board and pattern, the area, the state of the subfloor, underfloor heating and underlay, stairs and thresholds, and access. Because every home differs, a written quote after a free site survey is the only reliable number.

Concrete, Screed and Timber Subfloors

The subfloor decides which methods are possible. A concrete or screed base needs a moisture check before wood goes down, and a damp-proof membrane may be needed. A timber subfloor is checked for loose boards, squeaks and movement. Where the base is uneven or unsuitable, a layer of plywood can give a flat, stable surface to fix to. We tell you at the survey which of these applies to your floor and include it in the written quote.

Rooms and Homes We Fit

We fit floors in hallways, living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms, and up staircases, in Victorian and Edwardian terraces, family houses and flats. Each room has its own demands: a hallway takes the most wear, a kitchen sees spills, and a bedroom is where underlay and sound matter most.

Many homes in the borough are in a conservation area. Those rules cover external work, not laying a floor indoors, but listed buildings and leasehold flats can have their own rules, so check before you order. Our FAQ has more.

Choosing Which Floor to Install

Not sure which floor suits your rooms? Read about solid wood floors, engineered boards or herringbone and parquet, then ask us at the survey. We bring a recommendation, not a sales pitch, and you decide.

Insurance, Guarantee and Written Quotes

R3 Carpentry, who carry out the work, are fully insured and have been fitting floors for 14 years. Boards carry the manufacturer's guarantee. The free quote after your site survey sets out the floor, the work and the price in writing, so you know what is included before you decide.

Looking After Your New Floor

A door mat keeps grit off the surface, felt pads protect it from furniture, and a damp (not wet) mop with a suitable cleaner keeps it clean. Try to keep rooms at a steady temperature and humidity. We give you advice for your own board when the job is finished.

Floors We Install and How They Are Fixed

We install plank floors in solid oak and other hardwood, engineered boards, and herringbone or chevron patterns. How a floor is fixed depends on the board and what is underneath. Solid boards are usually secret-nailed to joists or a plywood layer, or glued to a suitable base. Engineered boards are glued or floated over underlay, which suits many flats and floors with underfloor heating. Brushed, matt and oiled finishes are all possible, and boards can be supplied stained or natural. We confirm the method for your floor at the survey.

Old Floorboards, Levelling and Sound

In period houses and townhouses the existing floorboards are often sound enough to fix to once they are secured and levelled. Where they are not, we lay a plywood overlay first. In apartments and upper floors an acoustic underlay can reduce impact noise, subject to the building rules. Each of these goes in your written quote, so nothing arrives as a surprise on the day.

Questions About Wood Floor Installation

Can you fit wood flooring over underfloor heating?

Usually yes, with the right board. Engineered wood is the common choice because it is more stable. We check the heating system and the board manufacturer's guidance first, and the heating needs to be brought up and down gradually around fitting.

Do I need to move my furniture?

Rooms need to be clear before fitting. If moving heavy furniture is a problem, mention it at the survey so we can plan around it.

Will you take up my old floor?

Old flooring usually needs to come up first. We confirm what is involved, and what is included in the price, in the written quote.

How long before I can walk on the new floor?

That depends on the fitting method and any adhesive or finish used. We tell you when the floor is ready for foot traffic and furniture, and what to avoid in the first days.
